                                        IMAGINE

“World peace is an ideal of freedom, peace, and happiness among and within all nations. It is the professed ambition of many past and present world leaders”

World peace, it’s always what you hear when people are asked what they would wish for if they got some supernatural way of completing anything. Unfortunately, it’s practically impossible because of the different views at life this world has. Soviet believed that our work belongs to everyone; Japanese soldiers were dishonoured if they came home alive from a lost battle, and the British were saluted. It’s just not possible to bring all these views of life together in harmony, it would require one supreme ruler of the world, obviously… that isn’t going to happen since some nations again, are locked to the view “The people for the people” A man is free to do whatever he wants as long as he doesn’t restrict someone else’s freedom. Not many people like the idea of being ruled by one single being.

Aliyaho Pearce created a flash movie on the net a few years ago where he included a response to Martin Luther King jr’s speech. “War. Mankind can't live without it. Some take joy in the death of others, some do it because they’re told to, others still justify their ways by “bringing resolution to the matter” to them we’re the enemy, we’re the evil empire. To us they’re the destructive opposers of truth and justice. There's no good or evil, just hate.”

So how can we make this a better place? The problem is ignorance, helping someone without getting something back? Forget it. In these times, every single action is controlled by egoism. Even friendship is a thing that gains benefits for yourself. Helping other persons is always in hope of some sort of recognition, fame or a favour in return some other time. It makes us feel good, we always think we did something good and we’re happy with it.
If someone actually would try to think over the consequences of choices the person makes through a day, it could create a lot of good presuming the person isn’t evil. Pollution also comes from egoism and ignorance. Anyone would stop the pollution if they could find a cheap way that benefited them in one or another way. George W. Bush says that there’s no proof that pollution causes global warming, that was his argument for not signing the Kyoto agreement. This benefits him by not drawing money for purifying the CO2 from factories and the industry. If everyone weren’t so incredibly obsessed with possessions and money, the world would be a much better place to live in.

My third point is respect. Nowadays, lack of respect is a common thing. Respect a fellow human, doesn’t matter how low the person is, he’s still one of your kind. The Japanese had some very good points regarding this problem. They always had respect for their opponent, disgracing a fellow human would get you expelled from society, pride was a great thing for them. If you showed everyone the same amount of respect, the world would be a more tolerant and inviting place. It would be harder to feel special though.
Speaking of treating everyone the same, racism. Some persons believe that other races have less of a right to live or have a worthy life. Racism is one of the reasons that WW2 started. Racism usually comes from not knowing. People are afraid of what they can’t understand. People are used to the known, their own race. How can they know if their coloured neighbours sacrifices their kids to heathen gods? The reaction is often open harassing.
Hunger is also a widely spread problem in the third world. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, more than 25,000 people died of starvation every day in 2003. We have all read it “If the resources of the earth were spread correctly, everyone would have enough to have a worthy life.” The problem here again is egoism; very few people would give away a privilege they’ve had since birth.

At the end, the best description I could find of a perfect world is this:

“Utopia is largely based on Plato's Republic. It is a perfect version of Republic wherein the beauties of society reign (e.g.: equalism and a general pacifist attitude), although its citizens are all ready to fight if need be. The evils of society, e.g.: poverty and misery are all removed. It has few laws, no lawyers and rarely sends its citizens to war, but hires mercenaries from among its war-prone neighbors (these mercenaries were deliberately sent into dangerous situations in the hope that the more warlike populations of all surrounding countries will be weeded out, leaving peaceful peoples). The society encourages tolerance of all religions”

The word Utopia first existed in a book written by Sir Thomas More. It tells the tale of a person who travels to a fictional island at the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The island has a perfect social, legal and political system.

In my opinion, Utopia is the perfect place, where everyone can live in harmony without the worries of hunger, war and politics. Maybe we will find that world one fine day, a world where everyone accepts each other. A world where you can pursue your own sense of perfection without being looked down upon.
Sadly, it’s probably not going to happen during my time.
